Used Forklift Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Right Forklift

Used forklift inspection and buying guide

Buying a used forklift can save your business thousands of pounds while providing reliable material handling for years to come. However, choosing the right machine depends on your workload, lifting capacity, operating environment and the condition of the individual forklift. A low purchase price is only worthwhile when the machine is suitable and the potential repair costs are understood.

Decide What You Need

Before buying, consider the maximum weight you need to lift, the height you need to reach and whether the forklift will operate indoors or outdoors. Measure aisle widths, door heights and available turning space. Consider whether you need a counterbalance forklift, reach truck or another type of material-handling equipment.

Check the Lifting Capacity

Always check the manufacturer’s data plate and rated capacity. Capacity can change depending on lift height, load centre and attachments. Do not assume that a forklift rated for a particular weight can safely lift that weight at every height. Ensure the machine is suitable for your intended loads and operating conditions.

Inspect the Mast and Hydraulics

Check the mast for damage, excessive wear and signs of poor maintenance. Inspect hydraulic hoses, cylinders and connections for leaks. Where safe and practical, request a demonstration of the mast raising, lowering and tilting under appropriate conditions. Check that the lift height is suitable for your warehouse or site.

Inspect the Battery or Engine

For electric forklifts, ask about battery age, charging equipment and any known faults. Battery replacement can be a significant expense, so its condition should be considered carefully. For diesel or LPG machines, check starting, running condition, fluid leaks and service history. Confirm that the fuel type is appropriate for your working environment.

Check Tyres, Brakes and Steering

Inspect tyres for wear, damage and suitability for the surfaces where the forklift will operate. Check steering, brakes, parking brake, lights, horn and other safety features. Any faults affecting safe operation should be assessed and repaired by a competent person before the machine is put into service.

Review Service and Inspection Records

Ask for maintenance records and details of any known faults or previous repairs. In the UK, lifting equipment used at work is subject to applicable LOLER and PUWER requirements. Confirm that the necessary thorough examination and inspection documentation is available and appropriate. A routine service is not a substitute for a required thorough examination.

Calculate the Total Purchase Cost

Consider the purchase price, transport, servicing, repairs, replacement tyres, battery costs and any required inspections. A forklift sold as untested or with a known fault may still be suitable for a buyer with repair facilities, but the risk should be reflected in the price. Obtain professional repair estimates where possible before committing.

Compare Similar Machines

Compare the same make and model, taking account of age, operating hours, lift capacity, mast configuration, battery or engine condition and included accessories. Advertised prices do not necessarily represent completed sale values. Look for comparable sold examples where available and allow for differences in condition.

Arrange Inspection and Delivery

Forklifts are heavy machines that require suitable loading and transport arrangements. Confirm dimensions, weight, collection access and whether the machine can be safely loaded. Do not operate equipment with known safety-critical faults. Arrange an inspection or demonstration where available before purchasing.
